Schefter: Sanders ‘changed mind’ in extending Broncos deal

There’s no need to bet on himself now, but Emmanuel Sanders nearly did just that before inking a three-year extension with the Denver Broncos Wednesday.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told “Schlereth and Evans” Thursday morning that Sanders had walked away from negotiations with the Broncos but had a change of heart.
“What happened here was Emmanuel Sanders changed his mind, basically,” Schefter said. “I think that he was determined to just play it out, go into the season, and wasn’t particularly pleased. And then for some reason … he had a change of heart yesterday, called up John Elway, and said, ‘I’m ready to do the deal.’
“And he and John Elway just finished off the deal together, just like that.”
The deal surprised some, for a variety of reasons, especially after Sanders tweeted out: “Roll the dice. Bet on yourself.”

But Sanders, who turns 30 next March, may have looked at the deal, Schefter said, and thought, “If a team’s offering you $20 million guaranteed, up to $27 million guaranteed, and you’re going to be that old … why not take that before the season gets underway?”
“He was ready to walk away from it. Then he wasn’t. And he changed his mind in his heart and his thinking,” Schefter said. “And when he did he called up John Elway, and the two sides, two of those men, basically finalized the deal together.”
