Report: Denver Broncos punter Britton Colquitt on trading block

Aug 28, 2016, 3:53 PM | Updated: 3:54 pm

Less than 24 hours removed from not playing a down Saturday night, it appears Britton Colquitt may be being shopped by the Denver Broncos.

According to 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis, the eight year pro could be on his way out of Denver via trade. Colquitt is in the final year of his contract, making a base salary of $3.25 million.

The Broncos drafted Riley Dixon, a punter out of Syracuse, in the seventh round of the NFL draft, and the two have been in an open competition during the offseason.

Dixon, who was named one of the 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award (given to the nation’s top collegiate punter) in 2015, handled all kicking and field goal holding duties in Saturday’s preseason dress rehearsal against the Los Angeles Rams.

After the game, Gary Kubiak paralleled Colquitt’s lacks of action to that of quarterback Mark Sanchez –– both didn’t see the field Saturday –– saying the staff knew what they had in each and needed to see younger players perform.

“When you have a veteran guy who’s been doing it for you, you know what they bring to the table and what they do,” Kubiak said. “When you have a young kid that’s competing with them, you never know how far they’ve come until you give them a chance.

“You can ask me about the quarterback, it’s the same thing with Riley. We wanted to watch him hold, we wanted to watch him punt. We have some tough decisions to make and we’re trying to help ourselves make those decisions with how they play.”

Dixon is slated to make a base salary of $450,000 in 2016, according to Spotrac.com.

According to Klis, potential deal partners for Colquitt could be the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Chicago Bears.
