When Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort said last month that the club’s payroll would increase in 2017, he must have meant it.
The team landed a big-name free agent Monday, infielder/outfielder Ian Desmond, to the tune of five-years and $70 million, according to Denver Post Rockies beat writer Patrick Saunders.

Desmond has played primarily at shortstop during his eight-year career, including his first seven years in which he played the position almost exclusively for the Washington Nationals.
However, with the Texas Rangers last season, Desmond only played outfield, mostly at centerfield.
But with a bevy of outfielders and a shortstop in Trevor Story who came in fourth in N.L. Rookie of the Year voting, Desmond could potentially land at first base.

According to Saunders, the Rockies will forfeit its first-round (No. 11 overall) pick in the 2017 draft to the Rangers because Desmond turned down its qualifying offer.
Desmond earned his second trip to the All-Star Game in 2016 with Texas, batting .285 with 22 home runs and 86 RBIs. He previously was selected as an all-star in 2012, when he was with the Nationals.
