For the third straight week, the University of Colorado Buffaloes has moved up in terms of its College Football Playoff ranking, climbing up to No. 9 in the latest tally.
With then-ranked No. 5 Louisville’s loss to now-ranked No. 20 Houston on Thursday, the Buffs, along with six other programs, moved up one slot in the rankings that determine the final four teams who will play for a national championship in January.
Colorado’s moved up the leaderboard each week since first being ranked No. 15 in the CFP’s initial tally in Week 9. In Week 10, CU moved to No. 12 and last week No. 10 — the first time since 2002 that the Buffs have been ranked in the top 10 of any major poll.
The movement comes on the heels of the Buffaloes convincing win at home over No. 23-ranked Washington State, 38-24.
Joining 104.3 The Fan on Tuesday, CU athletic director Rick George said the atmosphere in Boulder on Saturday in the team’s win over the Cougars was reminiscent of years past when his program was regularly in the national limelight.
“The stadium was rocking; people were having fun and pride in Buffaloes. It was a really great night,” George said.
George said the team, however, isn’t looking too far ahead of itself and instead is focusing on taking on No. 22 Utah at home on Saturday night with a Pac-12 South title on the line.
Should the Buffs win, they’d take on the winner of Washington and Washington State in the Pac-12 title game in Santa Clara, Calif.
If CU were to win out, the team would likely catapult toward the top of the CFP rankings, though it’s likely the Buffs will need a little help if they are to make the final four teams vying for a national championship.
