Colorado kid makes history by hoisting Stanley Cup

Few Coloradans have had a better year than Jaccob Slavin, who captured Gold for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics and followed that up by hoisting the Stanley Cup for the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

The Erie native became just the second American to achieve both feats in the same year, joining Ken Morrow from the 1980 Miracle team, who was on the Islanders that year as they began their four-peat.

Overall only nine players total have achieved the feat for any nation, all of the others are Canadians. Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan with Detroit in 2002; Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook with Chicago in 2010; and Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter with Los Angeles in 2014.

Slavin finished the playoffs with four assists while averaging around 23 minutes of ice time. He was limited to 39 games in the regular season, his 11th in the NHL. He has played in 784 regular-season games and 105 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Slavin, 32, was born in a Denver hospital, but is from Erie and graduated from Erie High School. He played for the Hyland Hills Jaguars, Littleton Hawks, Colorado Thunderbirds and then Colorado College. He is just the second person born in Colorado, joining backup goalie for Tampa Bay in 2004 John Grahame, to hoist the Cup.
