Avalanche unveil new-look ice ahead of 30th season in Denver

Hockey season is just around the corner, even though the entire city of Denver is in a football frenzy with the Broncos and the Colorado Buffaloes at the time. For the Colorado Avalanche, the 2025-26 campaign is one of the utmost importance, as Jared Bednar is hoping to lead his team back to the promised land after three early exits in the playoffs.

This season will be the Avalanche’s 30th in Denver after relocating the franchise from Quebec back in 1995. It’s technically been 31 years, but the 2004-05 NHL lockout pushed everything back by one as there was no action on the ice that year.

While fans are getting ready to pile into Empower Field at Mile High and Folsom Field within the coming weeks, the staff at Ball Arena have laid down the new skating surface for the burgundy and blue this season, and it’s got a little extra twist in order to honor the 30th anniversary of the team being in Colorado.

You can almost feel the chilliness of the arena just looking at that photo. The “30” laid out in roman numerals behind the team logo is neat touch as well.

The NHL announced earlier in the week that the Avalanche will have the second-most national TV games as they try to get the superstar duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar out to the world as much as possible. For fans who would rather be a little cold and have the goal horn blare into their ears throughout the night, the arena is already prepared for them.
