Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic gave an encouraging update on Sunday afternoon about the status of contract negotiations with superstar Cale Makar.

Sakic met with the media before the Avalanche alumni played DU alumni at Magness Arena.

And the biggest headline is that Sakic isn’t concerned about reaching a massive new extension with Makar, who’s entering the final year of his current deal.

“Yeah, not really an update. I mean, we continue talking and I’m pretty confident that he’ll be signed before the season starts,” Joe Sakic said.

If Makar signs before the middle of September, he can get an eight-year deal from the Avs. After that, the maximum would be seven seasons.

Sakic didn’t seem too caught up in the length of the contract, either.

“No, not really worried about it. I think when there’s a deal announced or signed and agreed to, both sides will be comfortable with whatever term it is,” Sakic said.

In an NHL offseason where big deals are being handed out left and right, Sakic was asked if that affects things. Super Joe played it cool — like he normally does.

“I’m not worried about it, I don’t think Cale’s worried about it. Dialogue’s been great and when there’s an agreement we’ll gladly announce that. And hopefully something will be done before the start of training camp,” Joe Sakic said.

Believe it or not, training camp is less than a month away with the Avalanche opening the regular season at the end of September.

And even though pen hasn’t been put to paper yet, this is a solid update from Sakic. There’s no panic from him and hopefully something will be agreed upon soon.

Remember, Joe Sakic said at the start of the offseason Makar will “finish his career” in Denver. It feels like not much has changed in his thinking.
