Jared Bednar says Avalanche remain ‘not locked into any one goalie’

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar has kept a consistent message when it comes to his goalies.

He likes them both.

And despite Scott Wedgewood only giving up four goals through three games to the Los Angeles Kings, Bednar isn’t ready to declare him the No. 1 goalie for the rest of the playoffs.

“We’re not like locked into any one goalie, Scott or Mackenzie, we feel confident in both of these guys. You have to be able to flexible,” Bednar said on a Zoom call on Friday.

The Avalanche beat the Kings 4-2 on Thursday night to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. They’ll look to sweep L.A. on Sunday afternoon and then get some rest before Round 2 against the Stars or Wild.

Jared Bednar isn’t down on Wedgewood, far from it, he just likes keeping Mackenzie Blackwood’s name in the mix.

“Scott’s playing really well, he’s doing a great job in all three of these games. We have a two-day break now. I think we just have to take it day by day and see how our goalies are playing and then choose our starter for the next game and move on from there,” Bednar said.

The head coach mentioned this is how he’s handled it all year long. That rest, health and how each guy is playing is important. They also want to keep Blackwood ready should the Avs need him at some point.

“I think we have our options and then we’ll try to just make decisions going game by game,” Jared Bednar said.

Winning a Stanley Cup is a long journey. The Avalanche have three wins, but still 13 more to go.

Jared Bednar is playing this smart, riding the hot hand of Wedgewood while making sure Blackwood still has confidence.

His number could be called at any moment.
