Cale Makar says Avalanche ‘want to win the Stanley Cup,’ do it again

Colorado Avalanche superstar defenseman Cale Makar already has a crazy full trophy case.

But that doesn’t mean he’s not trying to add to it.

Makar, at just 26-years-old, has won two Norris Trophies, a Calder Memorial Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy and most importantly a Stanley Cup.

Still, with so much good hockey left in front of him, Makar will add plenty more accolades as his career goes on.

At Avalanche media day on Wednesday, fellow star Nathan MacKinnon made it clear that he wants another championship. Makar was asked his thoughts about the 2025-26 season being the year Colorado wins it all again, and gave a thorough answer.

“I think for us, obviously, we want to win the Stanley Cup. That’s the goal for everybody, we want to do it again,” Cale Makar said. “I think at this moment that’s our goal but there’s still so much to do to get there.”

Yes, another 82-game slog awaits the Avalanche. They’ve made the playoffs eight years in a row, but have been past the second-round just once. That was the last time they hoisted the best trophy in sports in 2022.

“We’ve had some really good teams in the past couple of years and we just haven’t been able to get it done. I think this year there’s even more excitement around the team,” Makar said.

Colorado doesn’t have a ton of questions, as Cale Makar alludes to. Captain Gabriel Landeskog is fully back, talented forward Valeri Nichushkin hasn’t had any issues and the goaltending situation is finally settled.

“The success of it all, it’ll come, I think. That’s the exciting part is when you start building these bonds as a team. It’ll be fun and I think we’ll get there,” Makar concluded.

Avalanche fans are hoping they do reach the mountaintop again in June. And if that happens, you can bet Cale Makar will be a major reason why.
