The Colorado Avalanche’s starting goalie situation for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals has become more clear.

Darcy Kuemper was not present at morning skate on Thursday, and Pavel Francouz took his position in net. It will almost certainly be Francouz in net for Game 2 against the Edmonton Oilers tonight, with Justus Annunen serving as the backup.

As we told you yesterday, the injury Kuemper suffered in Game 1 could be related to the eye issue he battled against Nashville and possibly concussion issues as well.

Avs head coach Jared Bednar is scheduled to speak shortly. He will either confirm Francouz is the starter and Kuemper is out, or be coy about it. Regardless, it looks like the Avalanche will try to take a 2-0 lead without their preferred starting net-minder.

(Update 10:11 a.m.) –

Bednar has confirmed Kuemper is indeed out for Game 2.

Francouz will be in the net as the Avs look to get closer to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 2001.
