Avs goalie Scott Wedgewood earns top-5 finish for Vezina Trophy

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood had an incredible regular season.

Yet he was still snubbed from being a Vezina Trophy finalist, given to the NHL’s top goalie.

Wedgewood led the league in goals against average, giving up 2.02 per game. He also finished first with a dazzling .921 save percentage and posted a spectacular 31-6-6 record.

None of those achievements were enough to get Wedgewood into the top-3 of the voting, something he spoke openly about when the finalists were announced in late April.

“Throughout my career I’ve been overlooked in a lot of different situations and continue to will be. And you put chip on your shoulders in situations like that,” Scott Wedgewood said at the time.

On Saturday we found out exactly where Wedgewood finished in the voting, which was done by NHL GMs.

A top-5 finish is still something for Scott Wedgewood to be proud of, especially considering he was a journeyman and career backup entering this season.

Still he had better numbers than Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy who won the Vezina Trophy once again.

In the playoffs Wedgewood helped guide the Avalanche to an 8-1 start before things fell apart taking on Vegas in the Western Conference Final.

It wasn’t all his fault, far from it, but Wedgewood was pulled in favor of Mackenzie Blackwood for Game 4 of that series. The Golden Knights completed the shocking sweep.

Blackwood also received starts in Games 4 and 5 against the Wild, but was pulled for Wedgewood in the series finale against Minnesota — a thrilling OT comeback in which Colorado won 4-3. Wedgewood didn’t allow a goal after coming in down 3-0 after the first period.

He still has one year left on his contract and the 33-year-old is expected to be back with the Avs. Who’s the No. 1 goalie between Wedgewood and Blackwood is anyone’s guess, with months and months to figure that out.

Regardless, this is something Scott Wedgewood earned — even if the voters slotted him in lower than he ultimately should’ve finished.
