Avalanche stun the Stars late, steal two points in Dallas

A good day for the Colorado Avalanche got even better.

The team made a buzzer-beating trade to acquire Nazem Kadri, then seven hours later beat the Dallas Stars in a shootout.

Colorado stole the game, winning 5-4 (2-0 in the shootout) thanks to the heroics of Valeri Nichushkin and Scott Wedgewood.

Nichushkin scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to make it 4-4. He then had a filthy goal in the shootout, while Wedgewood made two great saves to secure the victory.

Wedgewood came in and relieved starter Mackenzie Blackwood who was shaky. He gave up four goals on 11 shots, but Wedgewood was perfect the rest of the way, making 10 saves, several of which were high difficulty.

Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas scored the other goals for the Avalanche and Necas had the second shootout tally.

The win really hurt the Stars chances of catching Colorado in the division and that’s great news. It looked like Dallas was going to get two points up 4-3 late and the Avs zero. Instead, Nichushkin flipped the script and Colorado walked away with the two points while the Stars left salty with only one.

In the standings the Avalanche now 93 points while Dallas has 86. Colorado has also played one fewer game.

Also of note was Gabriel Landeskog recording his 600th career NHL point in the contest, becoming just the ninth player in Avalanche / Nordiques history to accomplish that feat.

The Avs made a big trade on Friday then got a big win. Kadri should be in the building on Sunday afternoon at Ball Arena as another huge game looms. The Minnesota Wild will be in town, although it’ll be hard to top March 6, 2026.
