Avalanche sign veteran forward Jaden Schwartz to three-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche are adding veteran forward Jaden Schwartz as they pursue another Stanley Cup.

It’s a three-year contract for Schwartz as he returns back to Colorado. He played at Colorado College from 2010-2012 before joining the St. Louis Blues as a first-round pick.

The 34-year-old Schwartz has appeared in 861 NHL games for the Blues and the Kraken, tallying 233 goals and 320 assists, good for 553 points.

The contract is reportedly worth $3.25 million per year over the next three seasons. PuckPedia says the Avalanche now have about $1.28 million remaining in salary cap space. Colorado also reportedly signed defenseman Noah Juulsen to a two-year deal for $1.1 million per season.

Schwartz has played a lot of center during his 15 years in the league, although he’s also skated plenty as a left-winger. He’ll likely be asked to play on the wing in Colorado — as that’s a hole for the Avalanche.

GM Joe Sakic traded Valeri Nichushkin last week to the Columbus Blue Jackets, so the Avs have a need at top-6 winger. Schwartz can fill that and is likely chasing another championship as his career reaches the back end.

Last year in Seattle, Schwartz played 50 games and had 11 goals and 15 assists for only 26 points. It was his worst point total since appearing in 37 contests during the 2021-22 season. His best ever output is 63 points with the Blues during the 2014-15 campaign.

It’s a solid move by Sakic, adding a veteran who’s won a Stanley Cup in his career. Schwartz hoisted the best trophy in sports with St. Louis in 2019.

And the homecoming aspect for Schwartz is cool as he had a lot of success with the CC Tigers back in the day. Now he’ll try to do it at Ball Arena with the Avalanche.
