Avalanche president and GM Joe Sakic now part-owner of USHL team

Colorado Avalanche president and GM Joe Sakic continues to add to his impact in the hockey world.

On Wednesday morning it was announced that Sakic is a part-owner of a new USHL team in San Diego as the league expands out West.

As the tweet above mentions, the goal for the USHL is to launch these new markets for the 2027-28 season.

It’s an important league for 16-20 year-old hockey players who want to maintain their college eligibility and eventually pursue an NHL dream. Players do not receive a professional salary and 90 percent of the games are played on the weekends.

Joe Sakic is backing the expansion along with former NHL legends Luc Robitaille and Teemu Selanne, so clearly they all see the value in continuing USHL growth. Sakic and Selanne were teammates in Colorado during the 2003-2004 season with the Avalanche.

Super Joe keeps adding more to his plate, as he was named the GM once again of the Avs earlier this summer after Chris MacFarland departed to Nashville to become the Predators new president and general manager.

It’s unclear what (if any) day-to-day role Joe Sakic will have in San Diego, but it’s more likely he’s a face of the league to continue to draw more attention to it.

Developing the best young American players makes sense to keep the pipeline healthy to college hockey and eventually the NHL.
