Avalanche name Andrew Cogliano, Cup champion as a player, new assistant GM

The Colorado Avalanche have a new assistant GM.

And it’s a familiar name to fans of the team.

It was announced on Tuesday that Andrew Cogliano earned his new title, a promotion from his previous role of special assistant to the general manager.

Cogliano will report to Avalanche president and GM Joe Sakic directly. Sakic, the greatest player in franchise history, added GM back to his title full-time earlier this month. He took over the role when Chris MacFarland left for the Nashville Predators.

Now, one can assume that Sakic will show Cogliano the ins-and-outs of the job and maybe down the road he will take over for Sakic as Avs GM.

“I’m grateful and thrilled for this opportunity to take on a more advanced position with the Avalanche,” Cogliano said in a release from team. “Since I retired, the Kroenke family, Joe and the entire organization – past and present – have been great to me and my family with the transition. This second career has gone as well as I could have hoped when I decided it was time to move on from playing the game, and I’m excited to keep working toward our goal of winning another Stanley Cup.”

Cogliano retired in June of 2024 after 17 years a player. His career consisted of 464 points (190 goals/ 274 assists) in 1,294 regular-season contests with the Oilers, Ducks, Stars, Sharks and Avalanche. He won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022 after being acquired via a trade a few months earlier. 

Overall, Cogliano skated in 172 regular-season outings with the Avs and totaled 39 points while adding 11 points in 31 playoff games.

“We’re extremely lucky to have ‘Cogs’ in the front office, and he’s been a key member of our staff since he decided to retire as a player,” Sakic said via the team. “We’re excited to give him more responsibility and make more meaningful contributions toward building and sustaining championship-contending teams in all levels of our organization. ‘Cogs’ is great communicator, and that skill will be invaluable for our program. This is a well-deserved promotion.”

The Avalanche are firmly in a championship window. And hopefully Cogliano can join Sakic in hoisting a Cup as both a player and executive.
