Avalanche make franchise history, tie mark for most goals in a period with six

The Colorado Avalanche obliterated the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

And they made franchise history, again, in the process.

Colorado won by a final score of 8-2 and scored six goals in the second period. That’s tied for the most goals the Avalanche / Nordiques have ever scored in one frame. It’d be done 11 times before, but not since 2019 when Colorado accomplished it against Nashville.

It was an onslaught basically from the jump, but in a span of 15 minutes of real time the Avalanche turned a 3-1 game into an 8-1 laugher.

Josh Manson had the most fun night for Colorado, earning himself a “Gordie Howe hat trick” in the beatdown. That’s when a player has a goal, assist and a fight in the same contest. In fact, Manson finished with two goals and two assists to go along with his scrap.

Brock Nelson added two goals as well, all the Avalanche stars wracked up the points and this was a good bounce-back effort. Colorado had lost two games in a row, matching their regulation losses for the season before defeats by Florida and Tampa Bay earlier this week.

Captain Gabriel Landeskog is still on the mend, as well as defenseman Devon Toews and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, but the Avalanche didn’t need their services in this game.

They make history it seems like once every few weeks — and six goals in any NHL period is impressive.
