Avalanche legend Patrick Roy went nuts on Mikko Rantanen after ugly hit

Patrick Roy is not only the best goaltender in Avalanche history, he might be the best ever in the NHL.

He played with fire in the net and has turned that into a coaching career. Roy was with the Avs from 2013-2016 before awkwardly quitting before the start of the following season. Colorado turned to Jared Bednar, and the rest is history.

However, Roy also coached a player by the name of Mikko Rantanen for nine games during the 2015-16 season. The Avalanche had drafted him 10th overall in 2015 and were excited about his future.

Flash forward 10 years later and Roy and Rantanen had their paths cross Tuesday night in Dallas. Rantanen, he of the infamous two trades last season, had an ugly hit late in the game. Let’s just say Roy took strong exception — and fair warning — used some obscene language.

Rantanen was ejected after taking out Alexander Romanov of the New York Islanders. As you can see, Roy immediately started barking at him and everyone on the Dallas bench. ESPN is reporting Rantanen will face no further discipline for the infraction.

It’s just a bizarre sequence, as Avalanche fans have fond memories of both Roy and Rantanen. But clearly there’s now bad blood between the two, as Roy was basically telling Rantanen he’s “not gonna finish that game” when the Stars and Islanders meet again on March 26. That’s more than four months away.

Regardless of how Avalanche faithful feel about Roy and Rantanen now, each guy will forever be a Stanley Cup champion in Colorado.

Making headlines with the Islanders and Stars is apparently just how pro sports go, as guys end up in different places still coaching or playing the game they love.
