Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood earns an honor for his stellar week

Colorado Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood is off to an incredible start this season.

And his efforts aren’t getting noticed only locally, but nationally as well.

Wedgewood was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week on Monday after going 3-0-0 over the last seven days. He allowed just one goal per game and posted a ridiculously good .954 save percentage.

The Avalanche beat the Sabres 3-1, Blue Jackets 4-1 and Bruins 4-1 during that stretch. Colorado is now 5-0-1 on the season, with Wedgewood in between the pipes for all six games.

Mackenzie Blackwood is getting closer to returning from an injury, but for now, Wedgewood isn’t playing like a backup. He appears to be one of the best goaltenders in the league. Wedgewood’s five wins are the most by any netminder in the NHL thus far.

Also, according to Avalanche PR, Wedgewood has the most games allowing one or fewer goals this year with five. He’s pacing ahead of Igor Shesterkin in New York with four and then a slew of other goalies with two.

After the mess that was Colorado’s goaltending situation at the beginning of last season, Wedgewood’s excellent start has been an amazing change of pace. The Avalanche look hungry and focused early, determined to get a top-seed in the Western Conference.

The guys will be back at it on Tuesday in Utah against the Mammoth, before playing an early (but possible) Stanley Cup Final preview against the Hurricanes on Thursday at Ball Arena.
