Avalanche center Brock Nelson nominated for Selke Trophy

Colorado Avalanche center Brock Nelson is a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, the NHL announced on Wednesday morning.

The award is given annually to the “forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.”

Nelson is joined by Tampa Bay’s Anthony Cirelli and Montreal’s Nick Suzuki in the top-3 of the voting. The Selke and all the other hardware will be given out next month at the NHL Honors.

The Avalanche have never had a Selke winner, so Brock Nelson could become the first.

Nelson had a very nice first full-year in Colorado after being a trade deadline acquisition in 2025. He finished with 65 points (33 goals, 32 assists) which was fourth on the team. Only Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas and Cale Makar had more.

But considering this is a defensive award, Nelson excelled in those categories as well.

According to the NHL he won 50.4 percent of his face-offs, finishing fourth in the league in face-offs taken with 1,459. Nelson also averaged 1:51 per game short-handed to help Colorado lead the NHL with an 84.6 percent mark on the penalty kill.

This is a great honor for Brock Nelson to even be nominated Selke and hopefully he takes it. The Avalanche have been snubbed for other awards, although captain Gabriel Landeskog is also up for some hardware.

Colorado currently is up two games to zero in its Round 2 series against the Minnesota Wild. Individual recognition is always nice, but Brock Nelson and the rest of the team remain firmly focused on securing a Stanley Cup.
