Avalanche appear to be making a goalie change ahead of Game 4

The Colorado Avalanche are in desperation mode.

Down 3-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final they’re ready to try anything.

And according to multiple reports coming out of optional morning skate on Thursday, it appears like a goalie change is coming. Colorado will be switching from Scott Wedgewood back to Mackenzie Blackwood, with head coach Jared Bednar also confirming the news.

The Avalanche aren’t down 3-0 because of Wedgewood, although he hasn’t been able to make big saves to stop the bleeding at massive moments. In Game 2, the Knights scored on him twice in the third period before adding an empty-netter in a 3-1 win.

And in Game 3, Wedgewood and the Avs surrendered four straight goals (followed by an empty-netter) and blew a 3-0 lead in stunning fashion. Clearly, Bednar is looking for a spark, and thinks maybe Blackwood can provide it.

In three playoff appearances, Blackwood is 1-0 but is allowing 3.20 goals against average with an .872 save percentage. He was the starter in a monster Games 4 victory over the Wild but then was yanked after also starting Game 5 and giving up three first period goals.

Wedgewood is 7-4 in the postseason with a .904 save percentage while giving up 2.48 goals against average.

Again, down 0-3 the Avalanche have nothing to lose. And if Blackwood can propel them to a victory tonight he’d almost assuredly get the net in Game 5 and moving forward as Colorado tries to make history and fight off elimination.
