Stokley dismayed ex-teammate Freeney chose Falcons over Broncos

Dwight Freeney is a free agent no longer, shattering the dreams of a reunion, of sorts, in Denver.

The NFL veteran, heading into his 15th year, will do so in the uniform of the Atlanta Falcons, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported Tuesday afternoon, much to the dismay of “CJ and Stokley” co-host Brandon Stokley.

Stokley, who played in Denver in two different stints late in his career (2007-09, 2012), was teammates with Freeney in Indianapolis from 2003-06.

But with pass rusher DeMarcus Ware on the non-football injury to start training camp with a bad back, last week Stokley pushed for the Broncos to bring in his former comrade into Denver to help shore up depth in that defensive role.

“I watched Freeney last year. He was good. He was really good. He’s got a lot left in the tank,” Stokley said. “And you’re not going to have to pay the guy a lot. You give him an incentive based contract. This guy could come in and be an asset.”

Needless to say Stokley was disappointed at the news that Atlanta snagged Freeney from free agency.
