Social media had fun with Shedeur Sanders’ slide in the NFL Draft

The Colorado Buffaloes were expecting to hear two of their players’ names called in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night. While Travis Hunter’s name was called early as the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up for the Heisman Trophy winner, his quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, was stuck waiting to hear his name.

Sanders waited. And waited. And waited. After the New York Giants traded back into the first round, it seemed like Sanders’ time had come. Until Jaxson Dart’s name was announced. That pick put the nail in the coffin on Sanders’ hopes of being drafted in the first round like his dad did back in 1989.

Down in Canton, Texas, at his draft party, Sanders made sure to keep the good vibes up after the underwhelming night. However, social media was all over the fall of the Colorado quarterback.

The jokes didn’t stop with Sanders, as many fans took note of how much ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. was propping up the 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year throughout the broadcast. On his final big board leading up to the draft, he had Sanders as the top quarterback prospect, over No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, and the fifth-best prospect overall.

Even Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders found himself on the wrong side of some stray insults from the internet, as the X/Twitterverse found some old posts that he made in the spring of 2024.

The community notes came back around almost a year later, as the social media users will always make sure they get the last laugh.

For Shedeur Sanders, he is now the top quarterback on the board heading into day two. The Cleveland Browns hold onto two of the first four picks in the second round with the New Orleans Saints holding onto the eighth pick of the day. If Sanders drops below the Saints at the 40th pick, then some eyebrows will start to raise.
