C.J. & Stokley react: Obama commutes Demaryius Thomas’ grandma’s sentence

For the second time in just more than a year, President Barack Obama has commuted the sentence of a member of Demaryius Thomas’ family.

Last summer, it was the Denver Broncos wide receiver’s mother, Katina Smith, released from prison before her slated released in 2017.

Wednesday, Obama cut short the sentence of Thomas’ grandmother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, who was serving a life sentence for running a cocaine ring in Georgia, with Smith’s help.

Minnie Pearl Thomas is set to be freed on Dec. 1.

News of the commutation spread during “C.J. and Stokley,” with both Brandon Stokley and Charles Johnson offering their thoughts on the matter.

“Football aside, you just want to look at the guy and say, ‘Man, look, congratulations to you,’” Johnson said.

Stokley said DT appeared to look like a different player out on the practice field Wednesday.

“I’m happy for him because he’s a good kid, and I enjoy being around him. Hopefully all that can put his mind at ease and now he can just go out there and play football,” Stokley said.

During the Broncos visit with Obama at the White House earlier this summer to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl 50 win, DT said he discussed his grandmother’s case with the president, 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis reported in June.

DT experienced a bit of an emotional rollercoaster during the 2015 season with the commutation of his mother followed by he and the Broncos reaching an agreement on a five-year, $70 million contract to avoid playing the season on a franchise tag deal.

However, Thomas posted the lowest yards per reception (12.4) of his career and his 9 drops were the fifth-highest in the NFL and tops among all Broncos players.
