Newton deal removes another quarterback option for Broncos

Cam Newton is re-signing with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal, according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Schefter reported that the contract is worth close to $14 million.

Newton played 2020 in New England on a one-year, $1.75 million contract with heavy incentives. In 15 games he finished the 2020 season completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 2,657 yards, with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Newton also added 592 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

The Patriots started the 2020 season strong, but the 2015 NFL MVP struggled as the team recorded a 7-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

According to reports, re-signing the quarterback to a one-year deal won’t preclude Belichick from searching for a long-term solution, particularly in the draft.

Bringing Newton back gives the Patriots stability in the quarterback room and also allows the team to put their attention on other positions, which could be key heading into the start of free agency next week.

This move take another quarterback option off the Denver Broncos’ list.
