Ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson jumped again on Giants’ depth chart

Russell Wilson had a great first nine years of his career in Seattle. He won a Super Bowl and made it to another while throwing for over 3,900 yards in five different campaigns. He arguably had the prettiest deep ball in the league, was crafty and elusive in the pocket, and was well on track to becoming a Hall of Famer.

In 2021, he had a down year in Seattle, then after he was traded to Denver following that season, he put together two more seasons that had Broncos fans booing him out of the stadium. His performance was so bad that the franchise decided to cut him and take on a record-setting amount of dead money on the books to get him out of town.

Then he went to the Steelers and fell apart in the second half of the season as the starter in the black and yellow, causing that organization to move on from him after one season. He landed with the New York Giants in 2025 and was subsequently benched for rookie signal caller Jaxson Dart after just three games. He’s gotten chances to come in as the backup to Dart, as the young gunslinger has struggled to stay out of concussion protocol this season, but he’s looked poor in all his appearances and has been met by a shrouding of boos.

The Giants had a change in regime this week, as head coach Brian Daboll was fired. Interim HC Mike Kafka broke the news on Wednesday that Wilson would not be the starter with Dart not playing, as he’s turning to another veteran in Jameis Winston.

Getting benched for Winston is not a good look for Wilson, and a sign that the door on his career is closer to being shut than ever before. In the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to the Chicago Bears, Wilson had the ball, up by 10 points with just under nine minutes left in the contest. He went three-and-out on the next two drives and went six-and-out on the final drive of the game as he turned the ball over on downs. He led the Giants offense to just seven yards on those final three drives as the team blew yet another double-digit lead on the road, their fourth of the season.

Has Wilson played himself out of the Hall of Fame over the last four seasons? Many Broncos fans sure think so — especially following his social media beef with Sean Payton — as his play this season for the Giants has proved that hanging up the cleats after last season might’ve been the right call, and getting benched for Winston might’ve been the nail in the coffin.
