Clayton: A Deshaun Watson trade scenario still on the table?

Maybe there is hope for a Deshaun Watson trade.

No, it wouldn’t involve the Denver Broncos. With the uncertainty of his playing status this season and the 22 sexual lawsuits against him that won’t go to court until maybe next May at the earliest, I can’t see Broncos ownership endorsing it.

But ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles could be a candidate. Schefter went back in history and reminded everyone that the Eagles signed Michael Vick after he had been jailed for running a dog fighting ring. Even though the Houston Texans have been saying they aren’t going to honor his trade request, you’ve got to think they would consider moving him at a discount.

Schefter didn’t think they would trade him at 25 percent of his value, but to get full value it would take more than a year to wait. Watson won’t even do a deposition until Feb. 22. He’s supposedly not tried to settle any of the cases. The courts may wait until next May to July to hear the cases.

In the meantime, the NFL has to determine if it wants to put Watson on the commissioner exempt list. Such a move would preserve his salary until he comes off the list.

Schefter believes the Eagles would be considered to be a Super Bowl contender if they could get him in a trade. Watson is considered the fifth best quarterback in the league. We’ll see if the Eagles are willing to make such a move.
