Where was the Broncos heart in a lifeless loss to the Chiefs?

An entire offseason of hope, hype and genuine belief died on the Arrowhead Stadium turf Monday night. The Denver Broncos, the team that was supposed to announce itself as the AFC’s premier contender on the biggest stage Week 1 had to offer, were dismantled 31-10 by the Kansas City Chiefs.

And on a recent edition of “Dover and Cecil” on 104.3 The Fan, Cecil Lammey wasn’t looking for explanations. He was looking for accountability.

“My god, where was your heart at?” Lammey said.

That’s the question that should be ringing through the walls of the Broncos facility this week. Not what went wrong schematically. Not which adjustments need to be made.

Where was the heart? Where was the fight? Where was the team that spent the entire offseason telling everyone it was built for a championship run?

The elevation of Davis Webb to offensive coordinator was supposed to unlock a new dimension. The addition of Jaylen Waddle was supposed to stretch defenses in ways the Broncos had never been able to. The continued growth of Pat Bryant and Troy Franklin was supposed to give Bo Nix the deepest receiving corps of his career.

Every storyline pointed toward a team ready to take the final step. And when the moment arrived, under the lights, on the road, against their biggest rival, none of it materialized.

Lammey framed the urgency in terms that leave no room for the kind of “it’s only Week 1” rationalization that losing teams lean on.

“It’s Week 1! You have Super Bowl aspirations!” Lammey said.

That’s the part of the equation the Broncos cannot afford to ignore. This isn’t a rebuilding team that can absorb early losses while it finds its footing. This is a franchise that went 14-3 last season, earned the AFC’s top seed and entered 2026 with the expectation that a Lombardi Trophy was within reach. Teams with those aspirations don’t get to sleepwalk through September and figure it out in November.

Lammey closed with the reality that makes the loss sting even more.

“There’s only so many games; it all matters so much. You don’t have time to screw around like this, and that’s exactly what they did,” Lammey said.

Seventeen games. That’s all the NFL gives you. And the Broncos just wasted one of them in the most-lifeless fashion imaginable.

The Chiefs didn’t just beat Denver. They made them look like a team that didn’t belong on the same field, and that’s the part that should haunt the locker room more than any stat line or final score.

The Broncos will regroup. They have too much talent not to. But the scar from Monday night isn’t going to fade quickly. And Cecil Lammey wants to make sure nobody inside that building pretends it should.
