Broncos game likely to set a warm winter weather record

The Denver Broncos have only played one game during the month of January in Colorado when the temperature was 55 degrees or warmer — that’s going to change on Sunday, with a record on the line as well.

The warmest weather January contest in the history of games being played in Denver coming into the day was the 2014 AFC Championship game on Jan. 19 — a 26-16 Broncos win to send them to the Super Bowl. Similarly, a win on this Sunday could get the Broncos so much closer to the Super Bowl, given it will clinch the top spot in the AFC and a bye, giving the team both home-field advantage and one less game needed to get to Santa Clara.

A Super Bowl, XXXIII, was the only time the Broncos played in a game warmer than 70 degrees in January. That too was a win, John Elway’s final game and the team’s finishing of a back-to-back crown.

This Sunday, the National Weather Service is already reading temperatures near the stadium in Jefferson County at 63 degrees at 10 a.m. A forecasted high is of 69 degrees, keeping in line with Denver’s so far unusually warm winter. The record high for the date was set back in 1956 at 67 degrees — so it will be both city and franchise weather history when the Broncos kick off against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Broncos have only played one home game (regular season or playoffs) in January that was 55° or warmer (Denver 26, Patriots 16 on 1/19/24, 63° at kickoff).

Every Broncos home game this regular season will have been played with a kickoff temperature of 60 degrees or higher. That has never happened before; the previous warmest for coldest home game of a season was 49 degrees in 1971.
