The Broncos part ways with another veteran from their defense

The Broncos have some decisions to make when it came to veteran players. On Monday, they started to make them.

First, Denver re-signed Shelby Harris, keeping the free-agent defensive lineman in orange and blue. Then, they decided to part ways with one of their best players.

Recently, George Paton said that the Broncos were talking to Jackson’s agent about adjusting the safety’s contract. Apparently, those conversations didn’t lead anywhere fruitful.

According to Mike Klis of 9News, those talks continued right up until the general manager deciding to release the veteran. But with a $1.5 million guarantee option set to kick in tomorrow, Denver decided to move on.

Jackson had one year remaining on the the three-year, $33-million contract he signed with the Broncos prior to the 2019 season. Denver had a team option for 2021, which they decided not to pick up.

As a result, the team frees up $10 million in cap space. They will have $2.882 million in dead money, the prorated portion of Jackson’s signing bonus that hadn’t been applied in ’19 or ’20.

The safety becomes the third veteran from the Broncos defense to be a cap casualty this offseason. Cornerback A.J. Bouye and defensive tackle Jurrell Casey were released last month.

Next up, the big decision looms. What will Denver do with Von Miller, as they have a team option on the Super Bowl 50 MVP, who is set to earn $18 million this season
