Courtland Sutton had an unselfish reason for getting his contract extension done

Courtland Sutton has embodied what it means to be a Denver Bronco ever since he first came to town in 2018. He’s always put the team first, and has been one of the few consistent pieces on a roster that has gone through so much change in the past seven years.

Sutton just inked a deal on a third contract with the Broncos that will keep him with the franchise through the 2029 season. He promised a bright future with the team as they head into the biggest season they’ve had since The Sheriff was in town in 2015.

The 29-year-old receiver appeared on NFL Network after Broncos practice on Wednesday to talk about his contract and the talks he had with the team before putting the pen to the paper.

“[The front office was] very upfront with me that they want me to be here, but it’s going to take some time to get the language of stuff figured out. And they knew that I was very realistic and understanding that, yes, that, you know, I would like to be taken care of,” Sutton said.

What came next was a pro’s answer that showed why he’s going to be a candidate to be named to the Broncos Ring of Fame when he hangs the cleats up.

“However, there’s a lot of guys in that room, in that locker room, that are due, and a lot of guys that have have performed very, very well. They’re chasing a second contract, and I want those guys get taken care of, and to be able to get mine taken care of, and get that out of the way, gives us that flexibility in that room to get the rest of those guys taken care of,” Sutton said.

Zach Allen, who is rumored to be close on getting a deal done with the team, is just one of the guys who is deserving of a new deal from the team. George Paton and company have taken care of some of their guys, but still have more to help out.

Sutton also knew that getting his deal done would help the team have a better shot at winning a Super Bowl, as there are plenty of talented guys on the roster who deserve their cash.

“Man, we got a really good team, a lot of guys that are hungry, that are up and coming,” Sutton said. “We got a lot of guys that went out and performed the past year, in the past two years, that it’s their turn to go get their money … My biggest thing was us being able to keep this team together as long as we possibly can so that we continue to chase this ultimate goal of being a championship team, and in order to do that you’ve got to keep the right guys around.”

Those answers should get every Broncos fan fired up. Their best receiver put the team first in order to prioritize winning, something that many other wideouts in the league wouldn’t do.
