Stokley: No roster spot for Siemian if Romo signs with Broncos

The debate over what Tony Romo would or would not bring to the Denver Broncos, or for other NFL suitor, will likely rage on until the veteran quarterback is traded from the Dallas Cowboys, is released and signs with another team, or retires.

But should Denver not only pursue but land the Romo, the next question would likely regard the futures of 2016 starting quarterback Trevor Siemian and 2016 first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch.

ESPN reporter Ed Werder told “Schlereth and Evans” on Friday that he believes a peaceful existence between all three quarterbacks — Romo as the starter with Siemian and Lynch as backups — can exist in Denver.

“I think any team that takes him is going to have a hard time looking at it like let’s build our team around expecting 16 games out of Tony Romo because it just hasn’t happened all that often. And It hasn’t happened at all in the last two years,” Werder said told “Schlereth and Evans” on Friday.

“So, in that case then, what the Broncos have in terms of depth at quarterback would be beneficial to them and make Romo fit the equation better.”

But former Broncos wide receiver and 104.3 The Fan’s Brandon Stokley said Friday that he doesn’t “see a spot for Trevor Siemian if Tony Romo comes to town.”

“Why would you have him on the roster and have another quarterback in the mix? I just don’t think it makes sense for the football team, for the locker room. You don’t want those kinds of distractions,” Stokley said. “You don’t want that hanging over Paxton Lynch anymore.

“You’ve got your guy Tony Romo, and he’s going to be your starter. Paxton Lynch backs him up, and that’s the way you go.”

Stokley said not only would it be wise to remove Siemian from a locker room of players who already support the young quarterback but also because it would be unfair for him from a development standpoint.

“I think you’re doing Trevor a disservice by keeping him on the roster being the third quarterback. He’s not going to be a happy camper,” Stokley said. “You go from being the starter to third string. You’re not going to be getting any reps at all.”

Tyler Polumbus, also a former Bronco and Stokley’s co-host Friday, said he’d have no interest in cutting Siemian just to cut him but would rather try to get some value for Denver’s 2016 starting quarterback, though there’s likely not much of a market.

“If going to get rid of Trevor Siemian, it’s got to be for a trade. And the NFL is an evolving process; things change overnight,” Polumbus said. “But a couple of weeks ago, we talked to Adam Schefter … and we asked him what is Trevor Siemian’s trade value. His response? Nothing. Nothing.”

If there’s no takers, Polumbus said he’d keep Siemian on the roster, though he conceded that bringing in Romo means Denver’s given up on the third-year quarterback.

“If Tony Romo comes, that means one thing is very clear, that Trevor Siemian is not your guy, obviously. But it does not, obviously, mean that Paxton Lynch is not your future guy,” Polumbus said. “So, I don’t think that those two have to be one and the same.

“Just because Tony Romo comes to town that does not mean you’re giving up on Paxton Lynch as your future. However, if he does come to town, it probably does mean that you’re giving up on Trevor Siemian.”
