Simms: ‘A lot of things to like’ with Broncos QB Trevor Siemian

Count “trusts himself” and “good decision maker” among the attributes CBS play-by-play analyst Phil Simms gives Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian.

High praise from a former NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion about a second-year pro who, before two weeks ago, had never thrown a regular season pass.

“There are a lot of things to like about him. No matter what, the whole NFL is nothing but a bunch of doubters,” Simms told 104.3 The Fan’s “Schlereth and Evans” Tuesday morning.

The uncertainty surrounding Siemian heading into the season makes sense, with veteran Mark Sanchez the presumed starter during the offseason before he lost the job.

And to boot, Siemian’s only NFL snap before the start of this season was a kneel down.

But in his first two starts, despite tossing three picks to his one touchdown, Siemian has played well enough to earn the Broncos a 2-0 start for the fourth-straight season.

His 67.8 completion percentage ranks seventh in the NFL.

“When a quarterback knows he can control the football, he believes what he sees,” Simms said. “And it makes you confident. It makes you more accurate. It makes you more decisive. Just keep going down the list. And that’s probably the biggest thing I’ve seen in Trevor Siemian’s game.”

Simms said that Siemian’s only going to get more aggressive as he gains more confidence and gets more experience in game action.

“I think as time goes on, Trevor Siemian, they’re going to open it up more and more, give him more trust,” Simms said. “And he is, I think, a very accurate thrower of the football, puts it on the money, and has just enough speed on it.”
