Sean Payton explains the hallmarks of a Super Bowl contender

Sean Payton is talking a lot about the Super Bowl on Monday, and the Denver Broncos head coach laid out exactly what makes a real deal championship contender.

Payton explained to Yahoo in a story that dropped Monday morning that Bo Nix is soon to be one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. In the same interview, Payton shared that the Broncos are capable of winning a Super Bowl this year. Though he admits the short-term goal is going for the AFC West crown.

Even in the short term of being the best of the West, Denver would need to best Kansas City, which has been to three-straight Super Bowls. Thus, that would make Denver a contender themselves. Payton says he believes this is the seventh team he’s coached that he thinks has a real shot at the Super Bowl, and he explained why he sees it that way when he met the local media later on Monday.

“It has to start with quarterback, it has to start with defense, it has to start with offensive line,” Payton shared when asked by 104.3 The Fan’s Zach Bye. “There are certain things that, if they’re not on point, it’s hard to make a statement like that, and when you look at some of these critical factors — that doesn’t mean that — just means you have a chance. And then I would say, most importantly, ownership, because there are 20 (teams) that each year have hope and dreams, and they’re dysfunctional at the top.”

Everyone is right in linking the future success of the Broncos to Nix, but Payton looks at it like any football coach in sharing the importance of keeping opponents from scoring and his team’s offensive line. What almost nobody factors into their Super Bowl picks is ownership, but Payton does.

The Broncos are entering their fourth year of ownership by the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group. And Greg Penner’s fingerprints, from Payton to Nix to a forthcoming new training facility, are all over the current orange and blue group. It’s a big change from the struggles Denver had in the wake of Pat Bowlen’s leadership. In fact, you can almost directly tie the Broncos’ successes to when ownership was at its strongest. And looking around the NFL reveals the most consistent contenders are led by stable and bright groups.

So the Broncos owners won’t be taking the field this fall, but they’re the ones who put everything in place and are dedicating significant resources to keeping the business taken care of so the team can focus on football.
