Sean Payton says Broncos never felt like they would lose despite struggles

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has seen this movie before.

And so have Broncos fans.

Despite a sloppy first three quarters against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Denver turned on its fourth quarter magic and left town with an 18-15 win.

Kicker Wil Lutz booted a walk-off field goal at the buzzer and the Broncos are now 7-2 on the season and riding a six-game winning streak.

“I think at halftime, it’s funny, your team grows and morphs and evolves into something. I don’t think there was a person in that locker room that felt like we were losing this game,” Sean Payton said postgame.

Denver was down 12-7 at the break, making several sloppy plays on special teams, and then trailed 15-7 after 45 minutes of action.

But like they did against the Eagles and Giants, the Broncos turned it on. Bo Nix found RJ Harvey for a touchdown pass to make it 15-13 then a two-point conversion to Troy Franklin tied the game.

After the teams exchanged punts, Nix had a huge run to get Denver into field-goal range and Lutz did the rest. Still, Payton knew the Broncos weren’t in a great place early, but found a way like usual.

“Now, we all felt like we needed to do certain things better, alright? But I think there was a lot of confidence coming into the second half,” Payton said.

When he was asked why that confidence exists, Sean Payton basically insinuated it’s because Denver has learned how to prevail in these types of games.

“It repeats itself. You can’t wish for confidence, right? It’s born out of what? Demonstrated ability,” Payton said.

And that demonstrated ability has the Broncos as the current No. 2 seed in the AFC and atop the AFC West.

They might not be aesthetically pleasing at all times, but this squad led by Sean Payton is never boring. And the victories keep stacking up.
