Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton wasn’t in much of a chatty mood on Monday morning.
And it’s hard to blame him after the Broncos offense struggled once again in an ugly 23-17 win over the Chargers on Sunday afternoon.
Plus, Denver plays again on Thursday night, hosting the defending champion Seahawks at Empower Field at Mile High.
Payton met with the media and took six questions and his two most interesting answers revolved around Broncos QB Bo Nix.
While Nix did toss a critical touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton in the fourth quarter in Los Angeles, he threw for only 123 yards and completed just 16 passes. Even with Payton now calling the plays instead of Davis Webb, the offense didn’t look better.
Payton was asked about Nix’s confidence level through five games.
“We’re not giving levels of confidence grades right now on a Monday morning before a Thursday game. You can go ahead and opinionate,” Sean Payton said. “I’m watching the film offensively and there are a ton of things we’re not doing well right now, so that has to improve.”
The Broncos went 1-12 on third-down against the Chargers, something Payton was focused on in his postgame press conference. They also only had 224 total yards, winning because the defense got takeaway after takeaway in the fourth quarter.
But Payton insists that he and Nix are in a good spot as they try to fix whatever ails the Denver offense.
“He and I will be on the same page each week relative to the plays and the plan,” Sean Payton said. “I think there are certain throws that we’re going to be aggressive with. There are other throws that we’re going to be smart with. We’ll be on the same page there.”
Seattle will be here before we know it and the Broncos have a huge opportunity to get to 4-2 with a win and survive this six-game gauntlet to open the 2026 season.
As Sean Payton noted there’s “a ton of things” the Denver offense isn’t doing well right now, but it’s much better to clean it up after wins.
