The Denver Broncos blasted the San Francisco 49ers 30-9 in their 2025 preseason debut on Saturday night, but that doesn’t mean Sean Payton was happy.

The head coach of the Broncos had an interesting postgame press conference, not thrilled his team was down 9-0 after the first quarter.

“I thought we started slow. That was disappointing. Both first units — so there will be a handful of stuff that we look at,” Sean Payton said. “There were a number of things that we’re going to have to improve on.”

Luckily for Denver, QB1 Bo Nix led a field goal drive to get the Broncos within 9-3 before QB2 Jarrett Stidham tossed a couple of scores. From then on out, it was all Denver.

Still, Payton voiced his unhappiness to the media.

“I just think a handful of these things, that have to be cleaned up, like tomorrow. I do think it’s important when we come to work tomorrow… I’ve got 14 things written down that I’m pissed off about,” Payton said.

Clearly, this was an opportunity for the Broncos that they didn’t seize. Now, putting in the work to fix the problems is crucial.

“The willingness of the player, employee, all of us to accept and make those corrections I think are important,” Payton said.

So, there you have it. Sean Payton isn’t leaving Santa Clara thrilled after a 21-point win. That’s the standard of excellence Broncos fans are hoping for in 2025.
