Sean Payton lays out Broncos objectives, wants to ‘play for a championship’

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton talked about the Super Bowl this summer.

Not just the event itself, but thinking the 2025 Broncos were good enough to play in the biggest game in sports.

Those comments were met with a lot of strong reactions then, and even more-so after Denver started the season 1-2.

With back-to-back heartbreaking losses to the Colts and Chargers, people wondered if Payton and the Broncos were ready to win when the lights were the brightest.

That all changed this past Sunday, when they stunned the defending champion Eagles in Philadelphia. Denver erased a 17-3 fourth quarter deficit for a thrilling 21-17 triumph. Their record is now 3-2, and Denver is tied atop the AFC West with the Los Angeles Chargers.

At his press conference in London on Wednesday as the Broncos get ready to face the lowly New York Jets, Sean Payton was asked about the massive result that went in his team’s favor.

“I understand the significance of last week’s win relative to the opponent. They’re all units. The first objective is to win the division, the second is to improve your seeding and then last play for a championship. That hasn’t changed,” Payton said.

It’s interesting that Sean Payton used the question as a springboard to reiterate the Broncos goals for this season. They want to take the division, host playoff games at Empower Field at Mile High then hopefully play for the whole enchilada.

This isn’t necessarily new from Payton, but he’s not shying away from where he sees this Denver squad going.

The head coach continued, talking about the task at hand and liking being overseas as a group.

“I think we have the right make-up and leadership to understand where the focus needs to be this week. I like that we’re over here. I couldn’t tell you or point in the direction where the hotel is, and that’s fine. I’m still trying to figure out how to get around in the hotel. It’s the perfect setup,” Payton said.

Essentially, Sean Payton is saying they’re not worried about the sights and sounds of England, the Broncos are worried about football.

And if that remains the focus coming off the Eagles victory, the ceiling is still sky-high for this team.
