Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton will miss training camp practice on Saturday, Aug. 8.

And he has a darn good reason why.

Payton will present Drew Brees for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The two spent 15 seasons together with the New Orleans Saints and clearly still have a close relationship.

Brees surprised Sean Payton with a FaceTime call asking him to be his presenter. Payton was emotional and the Saints posted the video, one that’s worth watching.

After Broncos camp practice on Thursday, Payton spoke at length about his favorite memories with Brees and the opportunity to join him in Canton. There’s also the very small issue of the Broncos having a scheduled practice that day.

“We’ve already begun to discuss. It’ll be one practice we miss, Saturday. We’ll leave after Friday’s practice and be back Sunday,” Payton said. “There’s a handful of guys here that shared a lot of those memories and we’ll be excited for him.”

When pressed about who will run practice the day he misses, Payton offered a couple of options.

“I’m sure Vance (Joseph) or Darren (Rizzi). One of our experienced coaches that are staying back… probably Vance,” Sean Payton said.

The Broncos will be in good hands with Joseph, who has previous head-coaching experience in Denver and had several looks last offseason to be a head coach again. He leads arguably the best defense in the NFL and is more than qualified to run a practice.

Payton also mentioned Rizzi, who is the Broncos special teams coordinator. But he spent time with Brees in New Orleans, so perhaps he also heads to Ohio with some other coaches on Denver’s staff.

Regardless, this is a great reason for Payton to miss one practice. The Broncos have more than a dozen during camp, so it’s not a big deal.

And it’s a massive honor for Sean Payton to be asked by Brees, one he sounds thrilled to accept.
