Sean Payton dunks on lazy analysis about Broncos QB Bo Nix

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is always going to have the back of his QB Bo Nix.

And the latest example happened Thursday on social media.

Geoff Schwartz, who works for FOX Sports, went on the show “First Things First” on Wednesday and provided some lazy analysis about Nix.

“I do think he just is what he is at this point. He looks like the same quarterback he was in college… He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.”@geoffschwartz says Bo Nix is who he is: pic.twitter.com/n8QL2op2k8

It’s the same talking points we heard about Nix when he was at Auburn and Oregon, particularly the last one. The notion that Nix is “not gonna push the ball down the field all that often” is flat out wrong.

According to “Next Gen Stats,” since the start of the 2024 season (including the playoffs) no quarterback has thrown more deep touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards than Nix (19).

He has a ton of memorable highlights flinging the ball long, including a massive 26-yard touchdown in the postseason last year to Marvin Mims Jr. against the Bills. That gave the Broncos a 30-27 lead deep into the fourth quarter, a game Denver ultimately won in overtime.

Any Broncos fan who’s watched Nix over the last two seasons knows he’s got the arm strength to launch the football. That’s never been a problem. He also has plenty of big plays that have resulted in long touchdowns.

Sean Payton saw the clip from “First Things First” and decided to dunk on Schwartz in the best way possible.

Essentially, Sean Payton is calling out Schwartz’s work ethic. And in this case it feels warranted.

No one should go on a national television show and make such an inaccurate claim. In fact, the social platform “X” has put a “community note” on the original tweet highlighting that Schwartz is wrong.

The Broncos are off on Thursday before facing the Vikings in the preseason finale on Friday, so clearly Sean Payton found a few minutes to scroll social media and fire back at Schwartz.

He’s correct to say what he did — and it’s another reason the head coach and his QB are beloved in Denver.
