Sean Payton: Broncos will look internally after ‘tough offensive night’ in ugly win

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is never going to apologize for a win.

And he shouldn’t.

Payton and the Broncos escaped the Raiders 10-7 on Thursday Night Football, a brutal offensive game to watch for fans in Denver and around the country.

The Denver defense was phenomenal, as always, and that’s the biggest reason why the Broncos are now 8-2 on the season and have won seven games in a row.

However, Sean Payton postgame admitted he saw what the rest of us saw. In a lengthy answer, it was clear that Denver’s leader isn’t satisfied with where the offense is right now.

“We’re never comfortable as coaches. So you’re asking, am I comfortable? As a coach, we’re never satisfied. If my answer were to you, ‘I’m comfortable,’ that’d be silly,” Payton said.

Payton can’t be real comfortable with QB Bo Nix throwing for only 150 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Broncos were just 5-15 on third-down and punted the ball seven times.

“Obviously, we’ve got to clean up the penalties, we’v got to clean up some of the execution. And that is an ongoing thing that probably never ends. You search for that Shangri-La,” Payton said.

Sean Payton mentioned the flags, something that has plagued Denver all year. Overall, the Broncos committed 11 penalties for 78 yards against Las Vegas.

Still, there is a glass half-full takeaway while also learning from everything that went wrong on offense.

“Right now, we’re a team that’s sitting at eight wins. I think we’re the only team that’s sitting there. And yet, we’re constantly looking internally. It was a tough night offensively, obviously, and I give them credit,” Payton said.

He might be in the mood to give the Raiders credit, but this one felt more about the Broncos offense. They have to fix things in a hurry before the Chiefs come to town in 10 days.

Still, as Sean Payton mentioned, Denver is the only team in the NFL with eight victories. That’s pretty cool at this point in the season, even if the latest win left a lot to be desired.
