"It was good to have a 100-yard rusher," Broncos head coach Sean Payton said of J.K. Dobbins after Denver blasted the Bengals on Monday night

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton loves his QB Bo Nix.

Every fan of the team knows that.

But he also realizes that the Broncos have to be able to run the ball this season to go the places they want to go.

Nix was great in a 28-3 blowout win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football, but the Denver running game will get a lot of the headlines.

The Broncos finally had a 100-yard rusher in the Sean Payton era, with J.K. Dobbins going for 101 yards on 16 carries. For Payton, this can be part of Denver’s identity, it just takes a little time to figure out.

“Obviously, early in the season, all 31 other teams are really working to figure out who they are. We’re no different. But it certainly was a step in the right direction,” Payton said.

Payton mentioned that he gave Dobbins and rookie RJ Harvey different series where they’d be the primary ball-carrier. Harvey finished with 58 yards on 14 rushes and scored a receiving touchdown late, the first of his NFL career.

“Both of them got in good rhythms, there was hard fought yardage. I thought those guys both ran hard. I thought we blocked them well, we pushed them well,” Sean Payton said. “It was good to have a 100-yard rusher.”

Payton’s coached nearly 40 games for the Broncos, so it was about time it happened. Now, they’ll look to ride this momentum into next Sunday after improving to 2-2 on the season.

“There were a lot of things that we were able to do tonight that can hopefully carry over. We change quickly to a team that just finished winning the Super Bowl. So, we’ll enjoy this one and then get back to work tomorrow,” Payton said.

That team is the Philadelphia Eagles, which will obviously be a massive test.

But for now, Sean Payton and the Broncos can soak in a beatdown victory. Denver needed it, the run-game needed it, and October is when we’ll find out who these guys really are.
