Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinator Davis Webb have been in the headlines a lot this week.
It’s not for the best reasons when it comes to football.
The chatter in Broncos Country has grown louder that Payton should take back offensive play-calling duties from Webb. Especially after Denver’s offense managed only six points in the first 55 minutes of a frustrating 24-14 loss to the 49ers last Sunday.
After practice wrapped up on Wednesday, Payton was asked if a four-game sample size was enough to evaluate Webb at the job and if Payton himself might give the Broncos a better chance at success.
“I think our focus needs to be more on the specific and the detail of each play, regardless. I think Davis is very fast and quick and understands what we’re doing,” Sean Payton said.
That doesn’t sound like Payton will be calling the plays on Sunday against the Chargers, the responsibility still lies with Webb.
But the next answer from the head coach was revealing.
“I appreciate the question, but I think the most important job I have is really evaluating the ‘whys’ and I think collectively we all after a game, and after a four-game sample size, look at certainly this isn’t championship football,” Sean Payton said.
Payton went on to ask how quickly can the offense correct these issues, an answer the fanbase would like to know as well.
But the headline will be that Sean Payton acknowledged on Oct. 7 that right now the Broncos aren’t playing football that is at a Super Bowl level.
They’ve got time to fix it, and a victory on Sunday over the winless Chargers would go a long way towards calming everything down.
Especially if the offense can click for four quarters for the first time all season long.
