In Sunday’s win over New Orleans, the Saints pinned down their ears and relentlessly attacked Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian.
On the day, the Saints rushed more than just the down lineman on 22 occasions, landing hits on Siemian 11 times, including six sacks.
On Monday, head coach Gary Kubiak laid some of the blame at Siemian’s feet, saying some of the hits he “has to take responsibility for” and the second-year quarterback needed to work on not dropping back too far.
“Right now, sometimes his depth is bad in the shotgun. (It’s) something we’ve got to work on. When it’s good, he’s stepping up. Sometimes he’s drifting and getting hit when he shouldn’t be getting hit so it’s something that we’re addressing and we have been actually addressing for about a month.”
On Tuesday, Siemian echoed his head coaches words, saying, “I think a lot of it is on me.”
“A lot of times I’m holding the ball for too long. I get what I deserve in that sense, but it’s a team deal and a team effort. It’s an 11-man operation so we all have to do our own part.”
But 104.3 The Fan’s Mark Schereth, co-host of “Schlereth and Evans,” believes there’s something bigger at play in the comments, especially since not just four weeks ago Kubiak wouldn’t have buried his quarterback in such a way.
“For your coach to come to you and say, ‘Hey, listen man. Our offensive line is taking a lot of heat. And therefore, I’m going to point out some of your flaws as well,” Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, that wouldn’t have happened,” Schlereth said.
“But he’s matured to a point where the coach feels comfortable putting him out there on public display and saying there are some shortcomings here, and I need this kid not to just play good but to play big. And that just goes to show you the confidence that is building within that organization in that coaching staff for Trevor Siemian.”
And though Siemian took much of the blame for the big hits he took, Schlereth said the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the offensive line.
“That offensive line sucked in New Orleans. Sucked. And if any of them tell you differently, then they’re lying or they’re not taking responsibility,” Schlereth said.
