Schefter: A team likely to make offer to Broncos for Mark Sanchez

With just more than six days left until the Denver Broncos open up their title defense against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football, a decision on a certain No. 6 still remains up in the air.

Head coach Gary Kubiak put an end to the quarterback competition this week by announcing second-year pro Trevor Siemian would be the team’s starter on Sept. 8, but the lingering question on what is Mark Sanchez’s role in Denver remains.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told “Schlereth and Evans” Thursday that he believes Sanchez, who by many accounts was the presumptive starter heading into training camp, is more likely to find himself on a roster outside of Denver rather than in it.

“There’s just a lot of questions and a lot of intrigue as we head into the weekend, but ultimately I don’t believe Mark Sanchez will be in Denver,” Schefter said.

Among the teams potentially interested in the eight-year pro’s services, Schefter said, were the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers.

“My guess would be, one way or another, that there is a team, one of those teams, that steps up and ultimately calls the Broncos and makes a deal for him at some point this weekend,” Schefter said.

Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported Wednesday that the Vikings, who lost starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to severe knee injury this week, were interested in trading for Sanchez and willing to pay his entire $4.5 million salary for 2016.

Schefter said he thought it unlikely that the Broncos would keep Sanchez with Trevor Siemian the starter and Paxton Lynch the future, as most teams carry just two quarterbacks because roster spots are so precious.

“If you’ve got a roster as talented as the Broncos, they probably need that roster spot,” Schefter said.
