DMac: Saints signing recently cut Broncos TE Phillips ‘sharp’

Last week, the Denver Broncos released veteran tight end John Phillips in a series of moves to shore up defensive backfield depth.

With cornerbacks Kayvon Webster down with a hamstring and Aqib Talib out with a back, Denver promoted Taurean Nixon ahead of Sunday’s match up with the Raiders in Oakland.

And with the Broncos having recently acquired tight end A.J. Derby from the New England Patriots, subsequently Phillips, a seven-year veteran, ended up the odd man out.

But that move could come back to fire for the Broncos, according to 104.3 The Fan’s “The Drive” co-host DMac and Alfred Williams, as Phillips was claimed with Denver’s next opponent: the New Orleans Saints.

“Pretty sharp by the Saints. What does it cost them, the 53rd guy on their roster? Big deal, right?” DMac said Tuesday.

DMac said Phillips, who likely knows the ins and outs of Denver’s playbook and calls, has no obligation to be loyal to a team that left him “out of a job”

“They signed him today, you know why? You sign him today, and you get him in your building today, you can extract all the information and put into a game plan today and tomorrow you can give it to your team,” Williams said.

In his limited role in Denver, Phillips played in eight games, recording 5 catches for 40 yard and a touchdown.

Previously, Phillips played for the San Diego Chargers from 2013-2015 and the Dallas Cowboys from 2009 to 2012.
