Hypothetical deal of Romo to Broncos untenable due to money issue

Like the Denver Broncos during training camp, or the Denver Broncos up until last Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys appear to have a serious quarterback question lying ahead.

When veteran gunslinger Tony Romo returns from injury, will rookie sensation Dak Prescott remain the starter?

That’s a problem for another franchise, but could the Broncos offer a solution in the former of a deal — as hypothesized by Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla — that would land Romo in Denver?

Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans of 104.3 The Fan’s “Schlereth and Evans” said no, quashing the notion due to salary cap issues, among other things.

“If you’re the Broncos, first off, Tony Romo is making a boatload of money. So one, I don’t think you could ever fit him under your cap,” Schlereth said Monday. “That would be the first hurdle.”

Said Evans: “The stark reality of economics gets in the way.”

Should Romo and the Cowboys cut ties, Dallas would face more than $72 million in dead cap space, according to Spotrac.com. In salary alone, Romo’s due $14 in 2017, with a $ million signing bonus, $19.5 million in 2018, and $20.5 million in 2019.

Denver does have an estimated $8.5 milllion in cap space, but serious work would need to go into making the money fit if Romo were on his way.

However, money’s not the only factor in this hypothetical that sees the veteran quarterback staying put.

“If you’re a Dallas team, all of a sudden you’re looking up and you’re like, ‘Hey wait a minute. We’re 5-1. We’ve got a legitimate chance at this.’ If you’re in that situation, don’t you keep as many quarterbacks around as possible, just in case?” Evans asked.

Not to mention, Romo’s injury history could make it unlikely for him to land in Denver.

“Tony Romo has been an injury just waiting to happen for the last couple of seasons,” Schlereth said. “How is that going to work in Broncos training camp, especially with an offensive line that’s got their own struggles going on right now?”
