Suppose RJ Harvey had played at Ball Arena on Sunday. In that case, members of Broncos Country may have left without their hats — instead, the rookie running back left Empower Field on Sunday with his jersey and a game ball after he powered his Denver group past Dallas 44-24.
The future of the Bronco backfield made a big statement during Denver’s rout, tallying three touchdowns — including the first two rushing of his career. His first on the ground will always be a highlight, a pitch to the left side led by some awesome blocks by Quinn Meinerz that went for 40 yards and the score.
“It was a toss play, and the offensive line got to their blocks, and so did the receivers. It was nothing but grass, ran as fast as I could,” Harvey said after the win.

Harvey tallied his second touchdown out of the wildcat later in the first half, a fun sight to see, given it was kind of a return for the running back. Harvey actually went to Virginia as a quarterback before transferring to UCF, where he was converted to a rusher and became one of the better runners in the Big 12. It’s a hint at the possible future versatility of Harvey under Sean Payton that the coach has utilized players like Taysom Hill with in the past.

Harvey then completed his hat trick with his third career receiving touchdown and second in consecutive weeks’ fourth quarters, as he picked up a key one in Denver’s absurd comeback over the Giants last Sunday. This time Bo Nix threw his fourth touchdown of the game to Harvey on a leak out pass from the backfield.

Meinerz said after the game, “he actually celebrated today. I gave him a hard time after his first touchdown when he just stood there. It was cool to see him jump into the stands. He’s a quiet guy and works very hard. It’s good to have a dual threat back there.”
Harvey finished with seven carries for 46 yards in a spell of J.K. Dobbins’s 111 yards on the ground. The veteran has really found his stride lately and may force Payton to get creative about using the rookie — not a bad problem to have.
“A lot of production from the rookie class, maybe they read somebody’s article,” Payton said after the game.
Receiver Pat Bryant also scored a touchdown, as part of his two catches for 40 yards.
The Broncos travel to Houston next week, where Harvey and Bryant will square off against another rookie skill position player having a strong start to his career, Woody Marks.
