Report: Jonathon Cooper completes counseling and mental health program

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper has completed in-person counseling and a mental health program, according to 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis.

Cooper was arrested twice in June for two different incidents involving his girlfriend. He faces a variety of charges, including a felony, and his future with the Broncos remains unclear.

Head coach Sean Payton said last month the team is taking the situation “very seriously” and that Cooper needed to “work on himself.”

It appears that’s been happening over the past six weeks. Klis reports the programs Cooper participated in took more than a month and included therapy and an overall wellness program along with the in-person counseling and mental health work.

Jonathon Cooper also has a virtual hearing on Friday in a Douglas County courtroom. He was originally set to have a jury trial this week, but that was changed when both alleged incidents were consolidated. Klis has said on 104.3 The Fan that a trial might not happen until 2027.

That would give the Broncos more options with how to handle Cooper’s situation this season, although the NFL could also potentially suspend him.

Friday’s virtual hearing should hopefully provide more context on the timeline for Cooper and what’s next. In the meantime, attorney Harvey Steinberg will likely make sure the judge in the matter is aware of the treatment programs Cooper recently completed.

The Broncos rookies have reported to training camp and veterans will join them next Tuesday. It’s still unclear if Jonathon Cooper will be on the field.
