Report: Broncos ‘likely’ bringing back coach after charges were dropped

The Denver Broncos may have another familiar face back in the coaching room soon.

According to multiple reports, former outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite might be re-joining Sean Payton’s staff. Wilhoite was fired from the Broncos after charges were filed in an alleged incident with a police officer at DIA in February of 2025.

But all those charges, including second-degree felony assault of a police officer, have been dismissed. That development happened last month, according to 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis. A civil case against Wilhoite is sill pending, reports Klis.

Still the Broncos and Wilhoite may join forces again with most of this matter behind him.

As the tweet above says, Wilhoite was the Broncos outside linebackers coach in 2023 and 2024 before being let go. He previously worked with the Saints under Payton and also had a stint with the Chargers.

Luca Evans of The Denver Post added that “no agreement has been finalized yet” with Wilhoite and the team. It’s also unclear if he’d return as outside linebackers coach, a position currently held by Isaac Shewmaker, or somewhere else on the defensive side of the football.
