‘Not much difference’ between Parcells and Kubiak, says Phil Simms

Sure, they’re both longtime head coaches. And yes, they’re both multiple-time Super Bowl champions. But mentioning Bill Parcells and Gary Kubiak in the same breath must come as an honor to the latter.

Especially considering the source.

CBS play-by-play analyst, and two-time Super Bowl champ with the New York Giants under Parcells, Phil Simms told “Schlereth and Evans” Tuesday that he doesn’t see much of a difference in his former coach and Kubiak.

“Gary Kubiak, there’s not much difference between him and Bill Parcells. The only difference is Bill did it with sarcasm,” Simms said, explaining that Parcells could “rip” players in a humorous way to get across his point.

Kubiak too is a “tough guy,” Simms said, working his team really hard. But the second-year Denver Broncos head coach has found a way to walk the line between motivation and offending.

“Coaching is so important in the NFL, and you’re seeing it in the Denver Broncos,” Simms said.

Simms credited Kubiak and his staff — most notably defensive coordinator Wade Phillips — in the team’s early 2016 success, along with its Super Bowl 50 run.

At practice ahead of Denver’s Week 2 tilt with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Simms said he could feel a high level of energy and emotion not typically found in a mid-week practice.

“And I said something to Von Miller just about it,” Simms said. “I said, ‘Man, it made me even feel good about going to watch practice. There is truly no Super Bowl hangover.’ And he goes, ‘Oh no. We’re still rolling from the Super Bowl.’ And just the way he said it. And I said, ‘Boy, that’s exactly right.’”

And put a lot of that on Kubiak’s shoulders, who’s managed to take a second head coaching opportunity in Denver and turn it into at least one title run — and a 2-0 start to a title defense.
